コントラクト
- z.lazy validates recursive self-referential tree schemas and reports field-level issues with exact nested paths on invalid tree nodes.
- z.preprocess transforms input values prior to validation and handles absent or mismatched types.
- z.pipeline chains schemas sequentially, passing intermediate parsed data to downstream validators.
- Object schemas derived via extend, merge, pick, omit, partial, and required enforce updated shapes without mutating the base schema.
- strict rejects unrecognized keys with unrecognized_keys issues, passthrough preserves them, and strip removes them from parsed output.
- parseAsync and safeParseAsync resolve asynchronous refinements and report async validation failures as structured issues.

# Notes on Zod Recursive Schemas, Transformations, Object Derivations, and Async Validations
## Known Solution Search Result
`search_known_solution` returned `NO_SAFE_MATCH` for the target symbols and validation patterns in `pkg:npm/zod@3.23.8`.
## Pinned Release
- `zod@3.23.8`
## Observed Behaviour & Mechanics
1. **Recursive Schemas with `z.lazy`**:
`z.lazy()` delays schema evaluation, allowing self-referential structures such as category/navigation trees. Errors nested multiple levels deep accurately retain the full index/field path hierarchy (e.g. `['subcategories', 0, 'subcategories', 0, 'id']`).
2. **Preprocessing & Type Normalization**:
`z.preprocess()` transforms raw input before validation. Returning unparseable values (such as non-numeric strings or empty strings transformed to undefined) produces structured type errors on the underlying validator.
3. **Pipeline Chaining with `.pipe()`**:
`z.pipeline()` passes validated and transformed outputs from an upstream schema directly into a downstream validator, ensuring end-to-end schema type safety.
4. **Immutability of Object Schema Derivations**:
Methods like `.extend()`, `.merge()`, `.pick()`, `.omit()`, `.partial()`, and `.required()` return newly created schema instances and do not mutate the base schema's shape.
5. **Key Stripping and Strict Modes**:
By default, `z.object()` strips unknown keys. `.strict()` causes validation to fail with `unrecognized_keys`, while `.passthrough()` preserves unrecognized keys in the parsed output.
6. **Asynchronous Validations**:
Async refinements added via `.refine(async ...)` require `parseAsync()` or `safeParseAsync()`. Calling synchronous `.parse()` throws an error indicating that an async refinement was encountered during parse.
Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions
Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.
A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.
Goal: verify pkg:npm/zod@3.23.8
Kind: HOW
Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
- pkg:npm/zod@3.23.8
Constraints:
- executionContext: node
Required runtime conditions:
- ecosystem: npm
- language: javascript
- moduleSystem: cjs
- packageManager: npm@10.9.8
- runtime: node@22.23.2
Rules:
- One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
- Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
- Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
- No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
- No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
- No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
- Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
