# iconv-lite Public API Behavior: iconv.decode
## Overview
`iconv-lite` provides pure JavaScript character encoding conversion for Node.js. This sample verifies the decoding behavior, encoding normalization rules, BOM handling, invalid byte sequence substitution, and error handling of `iconv.decode`.
## Pinned Release
- `iconv-lite`: `0.6.3`
- Runtime: Node.js (tested on Node 22 CommonJS)
## Observed Behavior & Traps
### 1. Multi-Byte and Single-Byte Decoding
- `iconv.decode(buf, encoding, options)` decodes binary Buffer or Uint8Array instances into JavaScript UTF-16 strings.
- Supported encodings include standard Unicode encodings (`utf-8`, `utf-16le`, `utf-16be`), single-byte encodings (e.g. `windows-1251`, `iso-8859-1`, `cp437`), and East Asian multi-byte encodings (e.g. `gbk`, `shift_jis`, `euc-kr`, `big5`).
### 2. Encoding Name Canonicalization
- Encoding strings are normalized by `iconv._canonicalizeEncoding(encoding)`: all non-alphanumeric characters are stripped and characters are converted to lowercase.
- Consequently, `'UTF-8'`, `'utf-8'`, `'utf8'`, `'UTF_8'` all resolve to the same UTF-8 codec.
- Code page aliases like `'windows-1251'`, `'WINDOWS-1251'`, `'win1251'`, and `'cp1251'` resolve identically.
### 3. Byte Order Mark (BOM) Stripping
- For BOM-aware codecs (`utf-8`, `utf-16le`, `utf-16be`), `iconv.decode` automatically strips leading BOM by default (`stripBOM: true`).
- Passing options `{ stripBOM: false }` preserves the leading `\uFEFF` character in the decoded string output.
### 4. Invalid Byte Handling
- When encountering malformed or invalid byte sequences in a valid encoding, `iconv.decode` does not throw; instead it emits the replacement character `\uFFFD` (for Unicode output) or `?` (for single-byte output).
### 5. Empty Buffer and String Inputs
- Decoding an empty buffer (`Buffer.alloc(0)`) returns an empty string `""`.
- If a string is passed as the `buf` argument instead of a Buffer, `iconv.decode` coerces it to a binary buffer and returns the decoded string.
### 6. Unrecognized Encoding Error
- Passing an unrecognized encoding name throws `Error: Encoding not recognized: '<name>' (searched as: '...')`.
Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions
Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.
A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.
Goal: verify iconv.decode in pkg:npm/iconv-lite@0.6.3
Kind: HOW
Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
- pkg:npm/iconv-lite@0.6.3
Demonstrate these symbols/APIs:
- iconv.decode
Constraints:
- executionContext: node
Required runtime conditions:
- ecosystem: npm
- language: javascript
- moduleSystem: cjs
- packageManager: npm@10.9.8
- runtime: node@22.23.2
Rules:
- One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
- Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
- Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
- No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
- No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
- No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
- Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
