MIT-0

Contrato

  1. browserslist.parseConfig(configString) parses multi-environment config text into section maps, stripping comments and empty lines
  2. browserslist.parseConfig('') on empty or comment-only string returns an object with an empty defaults array
  3. browserslist.findConfig(dir) discovers .browserslistrc files and returns structured section mappings
  4. browserslist.findConfig(dir) discovers package.json browserslist array configurations and wraps them under defaults
  5. browserslist.findConfig(dir) returns undefined when no configuration file exists in the directory tree
  6. browserslist.loadConfig({ path, env }) selects queries for the specified environment, defaulting to production
  7. browserslist.loadConfig({ path, env }) falls back to the defaults section when an unknown environment is requested
  8. browserslist(null, { path, env }) resolves target browsers directly from discovered configuration files
  9. browserslist.nodeVersions exposes an array of all known Node.js release versions used for node query resolution

NOTES.md
# browserslist Public API Behavior

## Prior Findings
A network search found samples focusing on custom stats queries (`opts.stats` with `in my stats`) and Babel cache retention (`browserslist.clearCaches`). This project investigates multi-environment configuration parsing (`browserslist.parseConfig`), configuration file discovery (`browserslist.findConfig`), environment loading (`browserslist.loadConfig`), and Node.js version matrix queries (`browserslist.nodeVersions`).

## Pinned Release
- `browserslist`: `4.28.8` (resolved via `npm`)
- Runtime: Node.js (tested on Node 22 ESM)

## Observed Behavior & Traps

### 1. Section-based Configuration Parsing (`parseConfig`)
- `browserslist.parseConfig(text)` parses multi-environment configuration strings into an object mapping environment names (`defaults`, `production`, `development`, etc.) to arrays of query strings.
- Leading queries before any `[section]` header are automatically placed under the `defaults` key.
- Comments (`# ...`) and empty lines are stripped.
- Parsing an empty string or comments-only string returns `{ defaults: [] }`.

### 2. Configuration Discovery (`findConfig`)
- `browserslist.findConfig(path)` searches upward for `.browserslistrc` or `package.json` with a `browserslist` property.
- When given `.browserslistrc`, it returns structured section mappings (`{ defaults: [...], ...sections }`).
- When given `package.json` with an array `browserslist`, it wraps queries under `{ defaults: [...] }`.
- When given `package.json` with an object `browserslist`, it returns section mappings directly.
- When no configuration file exists in the directory hierarchy, it returns `undefined`.

### 3. Environment Selection and Fallback (`loadConfig`)
- `browserslist.loadConfig({ path, env })` extracts the query array for the target environment.
- If `env` is omitted, it defaults to `production` (or `process.env.BROWSERSLIST_ENV` / `process.env.NODE_ENV`).
- If the requested `env` is not present in the configuration, it gracefully falls back to the `defaults` section.
- If no configuration file is found, it returns `undefined`.

### 4. Query Execution with Discovered Configuration
- Calling `browserslist(null, { path, env })` evaluates the queries discovered via config resolution against the Can I Use database.

### 5. Node.js Version Matrix (`nodeVersions`)
- `browserslist.nodeVersions` exposes an array of all known Node.js release version strings used for evaluating node queries (e.g. `node 18.0.0`).

Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions

Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.

A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.

Goal: Parse multi-environment configuration sections, load environment configurations, and query Node.js versions with browserslist
Kind: HOW

Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
  - pkg:npm/browserslist@4.28.8
Demonstrate these symbols/APIs:
  - browserslist.findConfig
  - browserslist.loadConfig
  - browserslist.nodeVersions
  - browserslist.parseConfig
Constraints:
  - executionContext: node
Required runtime conditions:
  - ecosystem: npm
  - language: javascript
  - moduleSystem: cjs
  - packageManager: npm@10.9.8
  - runtime: node@22.23.2

Rules:
  - One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
  - Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
  - Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
  - No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
  - No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
  - No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
  - Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
