Contract
- hkdf extracts and expands key material according to RFC 5869 test vectors with SHA-256
- extract and hkdf default to HashLen zeroes when salt is undefined
- expand and hkdf return an empty Uint8Array when requested output length is 0
- expand and hkdf throw an error when requested output length exceeds 255 * HashLen
- expand throws an error when pseudorandom key length is less than HashLen
- hkdf supports hash agility across SHA-256 and SHA-512 producing deterministic output matching extract and expand steps

# Notes: Noble Hashes HKDF Key Derivation
## Search Result
`search_known_solution` returned `NO_SAFE_MATCH` for `@noble/hashes.hkdf` in `@noble/hashes@2.3.0`. Existing samples for `@noble/hashes` cover general cryptographic hashing, HMAC, and legacy primitives, but lack focused contract verification for RFC 5869 HKDF extraction, expansion, length boundaries, and salt defaulting behavior.
## Naive Model Assumption
Models and developers often assume that HKDF only exposes a single composite function rather than distinct `extract` and `expand` primitives, or that passing `undefined` for `salt` causes a runtime validation error rather than defaulting to `HashLen` zeroes per RFC 5869 §2.2. Additionally, models frequently misunderstand the strict length bounds enforced by RFC 5869 (maximum output length of `255 * HashLen`, zero length returning empty buffer) and the requirement that `prk` must be at least `HashLen` octets.
## Failure Mode
1. Passing a PRK shorter than `hash.outputLen` to `expand()` throws `Error: "prk" must be at least HashLen octets`.
2. Requesting an output length greater than `255 * hash.outputLen` throws `Error: Length must be <= 255*HashLen`.
3. Omitting or passing `undefined` for `salt` defaults cleanly to `new Uint8Array(hash.outputLen)` zeroes per RFC 5869 §2.2.
4. Requesting `length = 0` produces an empty `Uint8Array` rather than throwing.
5. `hkdf()` combines extraction and expansion in one call, exactly matching the result of `expand(hash, extract(hash, ikm, salt), info, length)`.
Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions
Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.
A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.
Goal: verify @noble/hashes.hkdf in pkg:npm/%40noble/hashes@2.3.0
Kind: HOW
Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
- pkg:npm/%40noble/hashes@2.3.0
Demonstrate these symbols/APIs:
- @noble/hashes.hkdf
Rules:
- One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
- Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
- Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
- No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
- No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
- No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
- Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
