@noble/hashes 2.3.0: extract

MIT-0

Contrato

  1. extract derives a pseudorandom key (PRK) from input keying material and salt conforming to RFC 5869 test vectors with SHA-256
  2. extract produces an output Uint8Array whose length exactly equals hash.outputLen
  3. extract defaults salt to HashLen zeroes when salt is undefined matching explicit zero-filled buffer
  4. extract produces different pseudorandom keys when given non-zero salt versus default undefined salt
  5. extract supports hash agility across SHA-256 and SHA-512 producing corresponding output lengths
  6. extract throws TypeError when hash argument is not a valid hasher
  7. extract throws TypeError when ikm or salt is not a Uint8Array

NOTES.md
# Notes: Noble Hashes HKDF Extract

## Search Result
`search_known_solution` returned `NO_SAFE_MATCH` for `@noble/hashes.extract` in `@noble/hashes@2.3.0`. Existing samples cover composite `@noble/hashes.hkdf`, `sha256`, `sha512`, `hexToBytes`, etc., but do not isolate the standalone `extract` API contract, salt defaulting behavior, parameter ordering, and error boundaries.

## Naive Model Assumption
Models often assume `extract` follows the RFC 5869 parameter order `(salt, ikm)` rather than the library's order `(hash, ikm, salt)`. Additionally, models often expect `salt` to be required or that omitting it throws an error, whereas RFC 5869 and `@noble/hashes` default `salt` to `HashLen` zeroes when `salt === undefined`. Furthermore, models often attempt to import from `@noble/hashes` or `@noble/hashes/hkdf`, failing with `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` because exports require subpath file extension `@noble/hashes/hkdf.js`.

## Failure Mode
1. Calling `extract(hash, ikm, salt)` with non-Uint8Array inputs throws `TypeError`.
2. Calling `extract(null, ikm)` throws `TypeError: expected hash wrapped by utils.createHasher`.
3. Importing from `@noble/hashes` root throws `Error: root module cannot be imported`.
4. Importing from `@noble/hashes/hkdf` fails resolution; must import from `@noble/hashes/hkdf.js`.
5. Omitting or passing `undefined` for `salt` cleanly defaults to `HashLen` zeroes per RFC 5869 §2.2 without throwing.
PROMPT.md
Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions

Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.

A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.

Goal: verify @noble/hashes.extract in pkg:npm/%40noble/hashes@2.3.0
Kind: HOW

Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
  - pkg:npm/%40noble/hashes@2.3.0
Demonstrate these symbols/APIs:
  - @noble/hashes.extract

Rules:
  - One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
  - Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
  - Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
  - No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
  - No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
  - No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
  - Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
