Contrat
- proto.Clone creates an isolated deep copy where mutating cloned repeated slices, maps, or nested messages does not affect the original message.
- proto.Clone(nil) returns untyped nil when given untyped nil, and returns a typed nil interface whose ProtoReflect().IsValid() is false when given a typed nil pointer.
- proto.Clone preserves explicit presence for proto3 optional fields set to default zero values while keeping unpopulated implicit fields unpopulated.
- proto.Clone produces semantically equal deep copies across static known types and dynamic message descriptors.

# Protocol Buffers Deep Copy Semantics and Isolation with proto.Clone
This sample verifies deep copy isolation, presence preservation, and nil handling behaviors of `proto.Clone` in `google.golang.org/protobuf` pinned to version `v1.35.1`.
## Observed Behavior
1. **Deep Copy Isolation for Repeated Fields, Maps, and Nested Messages**:
- `proto.Clone` creates an independent deep copy of any `proto.Message`.
- Mutating repeated slices (appending new items, modifying existing indices) on the cloned message does not mutate the source message.
- Mutating protobuf maps (inserting new keys, deleting entries, or modifying nested messages inside map entries) on the cloned message does not affect the source message.
- Modifying fields within singular nested submessages on the cloned message does not mutate the source message.
2. **Nil Message Handling**:
- Passing an untyped `nil` (`var untypedNil proto.Message = nil`) to `proto.Clone(nil)` returns an untyped `nil`.
- Passing a typed nil pointer implementing `proto.Message` (e.g., `(*timestamppb.Timestamp)(nil)`) returns a non-nil Go interface holding a typed nil pointer whose `ProtoReflect().IsValid()` evaluates to `false` and whose concrete value is nil (`reflect.ValueOf(res).IsNil() == true`).
3. **Proto3 Optional Presence Preservation**:
- `proto.Clone` preserves field presence distinctions.
- For `proto3_optional` fields explicitly populated with default/zero values (`0`, `""`, `false`), the cloned message retains explicit presence (`protoreflect.Message.Has` returns `true`).
- Implicit-presence scalar fields that were unpopulated remain unpopulated on the cloned message (`protoreflect.Message.Has` returns `false`).
4. **Descriptor & Known Type Consistency**:
- Deep copying works identically across statically generated message types (such as `timestamppb.Timestamp`) and dynamically constructed schemas (`dynamicpb.Message`).
- Semantic message comparison (`proto.Equal`) evaluates `orig` and `cloned` as identical prior to mutation, properly handling IEEE 754 floating-point `NaN` values.
Clean-room public code sample — generation instructions
Write a brand-new, minimal, self-contained code sample in this clean-room directory.
Do not copy, paraphrase, or reference any existing project source. Work only from this spec.
A csx.json manifest scaffold already exists. Do not recreate it from memory. Preserve its case.goal, packages and symbols; fill its empty case.contract with exact assertions and correct its environment, commands and verifierAdapter for the files you generate.
Goal: verify google.golang.org/protobuf/proto.Clone in pkg:golang/google.golang.org/protobuf@v1.35.1
Kind: HOW
Use EXACTLY these public packages and versions:
- pkg:golang/google.golang.org/protobuf@v1.35.1
Demonstrate these symbols/APIs:
- google.golang.org/protobuf/proto.Clone
Rules:
- One focused purpose; the smallest project that proves the goal.
- Include a contract test (test/contract.*) that runs OFFLINE and exits 0 exactly when the goal behavior works.
- Pin every dependency with a lockfile so resolution is reproducible.
- No secrets, credentials, or tokens. No real URLs (only example.com or localhost). No absolute paths.
- No personal names, emails, company names, or project identifiers of any kind.
- No binaries and no generated output (node_modules, dist, target, venv, .git, .env).
- Keep it under 200 files and 256KB packed.
